I notice when I first start the car in the morning, or after it has not been driven in a while that for about 25 seconds the car idles louder than usual and then kicks down to a quiet nice toyota sound. Is this normal in the IA or newer cars in general?

I believe it is just warming itself up. My iA does it and so does my 97 Honda so I don't think it's anything new. I have been waiting for the RPM's to drop before putting my automatic in drive and driving off. it probably does no harm but one of the resonse I bought a new car is so that I don't have to wonder how it was treated and I can do those little things. Happy motoring!!!

...then kicks down to a quiet nice MAZDA sound.
Corrected. :D (There is practically nothing Toyota about our engines, transmission, or even most of this car).

The loud / higher RPM warm up is normal and (I believe) has something to do with getting the emission equipment up to temperature quicker. No worries. :)

The cat is designed to do that when cold to fire up the cat, they have tip run really hot to be clean. Mazda recommends to stay driving once the motor codes down to the 700rpm idle, longer than that is just wasting gas lol
