JD Power released its 2015 Quality Study, and unfortunately Scion didn't do so great. The study measures how many problems per 100 vehicles each brand experiences on average.

The industry average was 112 problems per 100 vehicles. Scion came in below average with 124 issues per 100 vehicles. Here is what AutoGuide had to say about Scion.

Another sub-brand that struggles despite having a strong parent brand is Scion. With 124 problems reported per 100 vehicles, Scion lands in the ninth position, but improves significantly compared to last year’s 140 problems and fourth place finish. Toyota, which is Scion’s parent brand, is ranked above the industry average of 112 problems with an initial quality of 104.
Fiat and smart are the worst though. with 161 and 154 issues per 100 vehicles respectively. So compared to that, Scion ain't doing that bad.

Its bound to be on an upwards trend.
iA and iM come from other brands that have those vehicles and their components out in production vehicles.
That's what I was thinking. Both Mazda and Toyota have pretty good quality. That should benefit Scion. Also, Scion didn't do that terribly. Sure they are below average, but not that far below average. Not nearly as bad as Fiat.

I wouldn't pay much attention to these studies, they are completely based on users filing complaints. So it isn't an absolute measurement of reliability, just a measurement of how many people complained.

I don't think that you can take this as the be all end all, but it is telling of something. Whether its complaints or actual issues or some combination, I still think that ranking near the top or bottom is indicative of something. It's not meaningless.
