Here is a review from CarBuyer in the UK. So ok, it's really a review of the Mazda 2 hatch. But since the Scion iA is essentially a Mazda 2 sedan, nearly unchanged, this review can offer some insight:

At about 3 minutes, the German review shows the engine is held by a prop rod. I expect hood struts these days, but I suppose the prop rod saves weight and cost.

I wasn't expecting struts, this is a cheap sub-compact vehicle and wit that there's a level of expectations, struts IMO doesn't fit those expectations.

BUT we can however get universal bolt on struts.
