Canadians, stop by your local Toyota dealer if you haven't already!

What do you call a rebadged car that gets rebadged one more time? We don’t know if there’s a term for it, but in this particular case it’s called the 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan.

Just launched in Canada, it’s essentially a rebadged Scion iA, which in its turn is a rebadged Mazda2 sedan. Although Scion is present on the Canadian market, Toyota curiously decided to bring the iA over as the Yaris Sedan. Obviously, it doesn’t share anything with the Yaris hatchback except the name.

As you can see from the photos, the only thing that’s changed compared to the Scion iA is the badging.

The 2016 Yaris Sedan will be offered in Canada with two models: a manual version priced from C$16,995 and an automatic versions starting at C$18,200. Both are powered by the same 106hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

With the six-speed manual, the 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan achieves a combined fuel consumption of 6.7 l/100 km (35.1 mpg US), while with the six-speed auto it returns 6.4 l/100 km (36.7 mpg US). The six-speed automatic transmission features a lock-up torque converter and a Sport Mode that boosts torque for more dynamic driving.

The automatic model can be ordered with an available Premium Package (C$20,200), which adds a Display Audio system with 7-inch touch screen, six speakers, two USB ports, heated front seats, aluminum alloy wheels, fog lamps, and a back-up camera.

Standard equipment for all 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan models includes cruise control, power windows and power door locks, all set off with chrome accents.

The 2016 Yaris Sedan is now on sale at Toyota dealers across Canada.

For some reason, and i don't know why, the iA looks odd as a Toyota. Yea I know nothing changed... but something's not right... Scion is at least a mishmash for the most part, but the Yaris absolutely doesnt square with the Toyota look

Yeah, weirder as a Toyota than Scion.

That's what i was thinking, but this was probably the only logical way for them to go about it. Wearing a Mazda badge is what i'd rather see if Scion isn't an option, but clearly that didn't happen

Quite strange. I would think that having consistency between the Canadian and American markets would be a good thing. Consider how much American media Canada consumes. You see a commercial for the Scion iA, but then find out its not sold in Canada, or rather that it is by a different name. It's just unnecessarily confusing.

That's what I was thinking, but it may be the case that Scion isn't received as well in Canada as it is in the U.S. so selling a product like the iA as a Toyota Yaris Sedan works better for getting it the sales volume needed.

Will they come out with a Toyota Yaris Sedan for the iA when it's closer to it's Canadian launch? Poor marketing plan if they decide to stick with the already existing Scion ones.

I think it's at the current state the iA is at, able to order and probably some folks taking delivery by now.

Doesn't seem like Scion is leaving Canada since the iM will still be sold under them and not Toyota. Just weird they decided to re-brand one and not the other.

Tried to find a reason for this and they are hoping that the respected Yaris name will help them sell the iA. Yaris already has a hatchback so I guess they wanted a Sedan too.

Just got yesterday my car... a 2016 Toyota Yaris R, as they call it in Mexico! (No Scion brand here)... It is currently produced in Salamanca City, Mexico, in Mazda's huge plant... branded and distributed in Toyota dealers... I was told it is distributed worldwide, and Mexico keeps only 15% of them...
Almost exactly the same car!
