Toyota is releasing a special edition FR-S that won't be coming to North America. It's called the 86 GT Yellow Limited Edition. It comes with a sunrise yellow paint job, an aerodynamic make over and will only be available in Japan.
There are two different version. One is the "Yellow Limited Aero Package," which includes Bridgestone POTENZA S001 tires on BBS 18-inch forged aluminium wheels, covering high performance brake pads.
The other is the "Yellow Limited Aero Package FT." That package includes everything in the first package and adds a big rear spoiler, low side skirts and revised shock absorbers for better stability.
I doubt anyone is really disappointed, only the small minority of FR-S fans that want a bit more. Plus people want performance improvements, more than aero and exterior styling bits.
And the people who are FR-S fans probably already have an FR-S so they most likely don't need to buy another one. I think that is a big part of the FR-S's sales problem right now.
No the big problem with FRS sales is that Toyota wont let it reach farther for sales. Its handicapped by its gutless 2.0 boxer. People are more likely to just jump into a new car then trying to get more out of what Scion offers them. Its a problem of pure indifference.
That's true, already they're not seeing the volume of sales they want ... which could mean either a slim chance of this happening or them doing it to get more sales.
I will also make the vehicle cost more, and depending on how much more it costs, it will start to be competing against vehicles that can probably overshadow it just based on the model/brand reputation.
And it might even turn out to be worse since nothing was really done to improve how it drives and feels. Those other vehicles might be a step ahead. More bang for your buck performance going for them instead.
But that's not with Scion as a whole, that was just with the FR-S due to its history and what it's sold as in its home market.
