Okay I’m really lost here. About a year ago I was doing deliveries in my 2016 scion iA and when I got back to my car and put it in reverse, my car started shuddering and making popping noises until it idled. This only happens when in drive or reverse. I took it to a shop and they told me I needed my entire transmission replaced but couldn’t tell me what exactly was wrong. By the time I took it to another place for a second opinion, my car was running fine again. Fast forward up until a couple days ago, my car did it again. Had it towed back to my house and by the time it was in my driveway it was running normal again. What would be causing this??? I’m honestly scared to drive my car anywhere now in fear it’ll shutter and idle again when I try to leave. Any idea at all???

Hi, I used to have a 2016 Scion iA. My transmission failed at about 102,000 miles. It was acting just like your car did. Your transmission is bad, and you need to replace it before the car leaves you stranded. The shop had to rebuild my entire transmission, and it cost thousands of dollars. They suspected the failure was because I never changed the transmission fluid. Let me guess, you never changed your transmission fluid? We’re kind of misled, because the service manual doesn’t really tell us when to change the fluid. But my transmission fluid was very black and burnt. Sorry, but glad I could help. I don’t have the car anymore, but that’s what happened before I got rid of it.

Since we have a normal 6 speed auto, the owners manual says change fluid and filter every 120,000 miles. I change my fluid and filter at 100,000 and there is no need to flush it. And I never have and never will ever flush a transmission. I know all of the fluid does not come out with a filter change, but I think more can go wrong if you flush them. NOTE- if you have a CVT (which we do not) change the filter and fluid every 50,000 miles as they are "metal-to-metal" load bearing.
And "NO" the dealership does not remind you. They try to sell you other "Easy to make money on" items.
